Crews remove rock, stabilize slope near Chapman Hwy.

TDOT crews spent Thursday removing large rocks from a cliff alongside Chapman Highway.

One northbound lane was closed most of the day as crews used a track hoe to take down the loose rocks. It's expected to reopen by around 4:30 pm, however more work will be done tomorrow. That same northbound lane will be closed after the morning rush hour.

A basketball-sized rock fell on the road Friday, damaging several cars. Another rock fell from the same cliff Monday.

"Structural engineers spent several days examining the site. They decided the best course of action will be to remove the loose rock from this rock slope. They'll continue to monitor this area to see if any further work is needed in the future," said Mark Nagi, TDOT spokesperson.

TDOT geotechnical engineers will examine the rock slope across the street from where work is currently ongoing along Chapman Highway and if needed, loose rock removal will take care in that area as well.

More work is also expected to take place in that area on Monday or Tuesday.
